There is no countercurse or method of blocking this spell; however, if someone sacrifices their life for someone else, the person who was saved will not encounter any adverse effects of any curses by the specific attacker (e.g. when Lily Potter sacrificed her life for Harry Potter at Voldemort's hands, Harry became immune to curses cast by Voldemort). One of the three Unforgivable Curses. During an audience interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival (15 April 2004) Rowling said: "Does anyone know where avada kedavra came from? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means 'let the thing be destroyed.' Originally, it was used to cure illness and the 'thing' was the illness, but I decided to make it the 'thing' as in the person standing in front of me. I take a lot of liberties with things like that. I twist them round and make them mine."[8] Rowling's use of this name may have been influenced by Latin cadaver = "corpse".

Pottermore

I for sure would be one of the lucky ones to be the first member of the Pottermore which would be launched on July 31. I sent my email at the first week of July the second I heard about it. Though the movie had almost finished my life on Harry Potter's world, I still would live it because of Pottermore.

Harry Potter Ending

The book was maybe the best book I ever read in my life I swear that. When I watched the film, I felt sad. It was too short and the scenes were like stuffed in too hard. I really like though the Final Battle. I wished I was there even as just an extra character or something.

And I just wished to have all those beloved stuffs from the Harry Potter world from clothes to wands and books and everything. I want Harry's world to come true.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Part Two

I was just very sad that my Harry Potter life has ended just this week.I can't believe it has to come to an end like this. It happened to be my life and I wanna go on with it. But then, it just ended.

Anyways, I just really hoped that JK Rowling will continue on writing fabolous stories like Harry Potter.

Please, let Harry Potter have another journey again. Please JK Rowling. |f you ever had the chance to read this, please write another epic story like Harry Potter. Harry Potter!!!!!!!1

MuggleNet's 'Deathly Hallows - Part 2' set visit preview

March 17th, 2010 seems so long ago now. That was the day we were on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2. Our set visit was to happen at night, which was a departure from previous visits. This day’s shoot was to take place outside for a nighttime scene in Part 2.

You’ll also hear from various cast and crew about the major scenes that will wrap up this franchise. An example? For the first time we’ll bring you set designer’s Stuart Craig’s complete thoughts on one of the biggest scenes for Snape.

All will be revealed in a few weeks! In the mean time, read our Part 1 set report at this link.

The benefits of 'Harry Potter' in the American elementary school system (and an 'A' for being featured on MuggleNet)

Student and MuggleNet reader Tyler Larson wrote to me this morning with a situation we hadn't seen before. In a nutshell: "My teacher will bump my overall grade up to an 'A' if my paper is posted on MuggleNet."
How could we say no to helping improve one's grades? So, we're happy to share with you 'Harry Can Cast the Demons Out of the Schooling System,' an argumentative paper on why the Harry Potter books should be in the American elementary school system. Read the entire paper here!
This paper hits close to home for me because I was first introduced to Sorcerer's Stone when my 4th grade elementary teacher (Hi, Mrs. Wilson!) read the book to my class. An excerpt from Tyler's paper follows:
With a failing elementary system in the United States, using such an admired piece of literature should be open for discussion. The National Center for Educational Statistics (2005) found that “40% of fourth graders…cannot comprehend materials at their grade placement readability [level], even though they have received five [or more]…years of traditional instruction (The National Center for Educational Statistics). With an elementary schooling system in need of a boost, and the captivation kids have given the series, the public schooling system needs to try to work out a way to eliminate the controversy and include these books into the curriculum, which would keep kids interested in learning some dull but critical lessons in a much more exciting manor.

Fan Art of the Week: 'Harry Potter Girls'

This week's submission titled 'Harry Potter Girls' comes from Alice and was painted with a digital tablet in Adobe Photoshop. It features Ginny, Hermione, and Fleur striking intense poses.
Noah's Notes: The painting has a great watercolor quality to it that allows parts of each character's body to almost blend with the background. Yet at the same time around each character the outline is layered, giving their faces and bodies visual depth. If I had 3-D glasses on instead of these brown ones, I'm sure Hermione would be jumping out at me. Whoa! Great stuff Alice!
To submit your own work and to view our archives: head on over to our Fan Art Section. See you again next Tuesday!
